Afrofuturism

I have been a fan, friend, and practitioner of Afrofuturism for almost 30 years. The cultural movement was coined in the 1990s and has evolved into a practice that centers the liberation of Black bodies, applied Afrofuturism.

Over the years I have been developing the below working definition of Afrofuturism. I hope this helps to frame Afrofuturism for you, however, since the afrofuture is forever evolving, so does the definition. Nothing is static in Afrofuturism. Enjoy the journey.

“Afrofuturism is a cultural movement that imagines Black people in the future, however, the construction of that future relies on the wisdom of the ancient and near pasts of Africa and the African diaspora. Afrofuturists research and incorporate into their work a diversity of ancient technologies, and sciences. My working definition of Afrofuturism: An intersectional, multi-temporal, multi-dimensional, and interdisciplinary approach to the future. Also called a liberation movement, Afrofuturism empowers Black bodies to craft destinies and realities of inclusion, health, joy, and prosperity using speculative modalities such as science fiction, surrealism, magical realism, and horror. The cultural movement investigates the intersection of race and technology while being inspired by mythologies, legends, spiritual practices, and cosmologies from Africa and the diaspora. Afrofuturism serves as a vehicle to not only liberate Black bodies but also liberate all humans.”
